It was early evening, the sun's last rays just beginning to fade, twilight settling in. The campsite, Max's regular by now, was well-trodden and flat, although it had hardy moss covering most of it, so it wouldn't get all muddy if it rained. The campfire was crackling, setting off some heat as the sun withdrew.
Max was watching the light sink below the horizon, the picturesque dappled sunlight disappearing where they'd shone through the trees. Flat on his back, head in Emily's lap, just coming out of a groggy nap, catching up on the sleep he'd lost from his night shift that early morning. The sun itself had been out of sight for a time, disappearing behind the mountains to the west, but proper sundown had been a bit of a wait. He wasn't in a hurry. They set the camp up as per usual, with some extra amenities as per Emily's stipulations. Not quite glamping, but not living as rough as Max usually did.
The full moon was tugging at his bones. He'd felt it all day, like an overstretched muscle or trapped nerve. He was used to it by now, able to fade it into the background for most of the day, but when evening came, it got harder to ignore. But he made a game of ignoring it, sometimes. Challenging himself to defy the moon just because he could. Rarely did he do it with much success, but tonight he felt a little more in control, even if the inevitable would come, anyway.
Lazy eyes seeing twilight falling, Max tipped his chin up to look at Emily, murmuring a soft, “It's a blue moon tonight. Did you know?”
