It was early evening, the sun's last rays just beginning to fade, twilight settling in. The campsite, Max's regular by now, was well-trodden and flat, although it had hardy moss covering most of it, so it wouldn't get all muddy if it rained. The campfire was crackling, setting off some heat as the sun withdrew.

Max was watching the light sink below the horizon, the picturesque dappled sunlight disappearing where they'd shone through the trees. Flat on his back, head in Emily's lap, just coming out of a groggy nap, catching up on the sleep he'd lost from his night shift that early morning. The sun itself had been out of sight for a time, disappearing behind the mountains to the west, but proper sundown had been a bit of a wait. He wasn't in a hurry. They set the camp up as per usual, with some extra amenities as per Emily's stipulations. Not quite glamping, but not living as rough as Max usually did.

The full moon was tugging at his bones. He'd felt it all day, like an overstretched muscle or trapped nerve. He was used to it by now, able to fade it into the background for most of the day, but when evening came, it got harder to ignore. But he made a game of ignoring it, sometimes. Challenging himself to defy the moon just because he could. Rarely did he do it with much success, but tonight he felt a little more in control, even if the inevitable would come, anyway.

Lazy eyes seeing twilight falling, Max tipped his chin up to look at Emily, murmuring a soft, “It's a blue moon tonight. Did you know?”

Camping was still not on Emily’s list of favorite ways to spend her days off, but afternoons and evenings like this made a very compelling case for the activity. It was like a quiet night in but better in some ways. Sure, she lacked a roof or her bed, but the woods were quiet save the sounds of animals in the brush and the crackling fire. No passing cars, no neighbors. The day had been warm, but not so hot that evening’s swift approach couldn’t rapidly cool the breeze. The insect incursions were minimal. The deepening sky with the faintly twinkling stars just made her feel happy to be alive. Satisfied to be in her own skin.

Along with the multitude of creature comforts she’d brought with her this evening, Emily had her large spell bag. She’d strapped it to her broomstick, letting it serve as a pack mule when they hiked up the mountain. She’d spared no space in the overstuffed satchel, bringing all her components and a few books she’d gotten from the Circle, knowing that her experiments for the full moon would be involved. However, the celestial body had yet to make its appearance, and she was in no hurry to start doing magic.

Emily read while Max napped. With his head in her lap, she idly stroked her fingers through his hair, only pausing to turn the page on her mystery novel. She was near the middle of the book, brow furrowed as she started picking out the strings of the mystery, when Max spoke and she realized he was awake. Lowering the book, she turned it over to rest it open on her knee, grinning softly at the question.

“Nah, I didn’t know… Does that mean you’ll turn into a blue wolf?” Emily popped her lower lip out to show that by “blue” she meant “sad”. Although, a literally blue wolf would be equally as amusing. She wondered if she was taking the whole “werewolf on the full moon” thing seriously enough. Pop culture led her to believe that the whole thing was traumatic and dangerous, but Max just looked sleepy and comfortable.

Max hummed out a wordless laugh, more a rumble than anything else, and gently shook his head even as his lips curled into an easy smile. The pout was cute, so he reached out and flicked her nose, playful and wishing he was still napping rather than feeling the ache of the moon.

“No, nothing like that. Far as I know, the kind of moon does nothing for me.” He'd have to double check with Mathus, but he hadn't noticed a difference. Dropping his hand to his chest, he peered up at her, watching the last play of daylight over her skin. “Blue moons are like, the second moon in a month? This one's a supermoon, too, closer to earth.”

Grinning, Emily echoed Max's laugh, scrunching up her nose when he flicked it. Ignoring his denial about what the moon might do to him, she joked, “So a very large sad wolf.” Bowing her head over his, she skimmed her fingers through the hair on the sides of his head, combing it down behind his ears. Cocking her head, she looked down at him, absently admiring his face in the evening light as well. “How long do you have before... you know.”

How did a person phrase it anyway? "You have to shift" sounded awkward, so she just left it at that. She also let go of any concerns about how serious this was. If Max wasn't concerned then she wasn't either.

Max's eyes flickered closed as Emily's fingers brushed the hair at his temples behind his ears, enjoying her ministrations even as he grinned crookedly at her joke. A big sad wolf. That'd be something. He wet his lips to joke back, some stupid line or whatever, but her question derailed his thoughts as he opened his eyes, furrowing his brows just a little as he thought it over.

“It's... different, each time. Sometimes I let it happen, spend most of the day and night shifted. Sometimes I try to hold back. It gets difficult when the moon is up, so I guess that's usually around the time I have to,” Max murmured, tipping his head up and looking at Emily. “Probably shouldn’t try to hold back tonight, though.”

Maybe it was his soft voice and sleepy demeanor, but Max made spending a day and a night shifted sound comfortable to Emily. Perhaps that was because most of her experience with that side of him had been relaxed, if she had to put a word to it. His head shifted in her lap but she kept playing with his hair. Meeting his gaze, she grinned and wondered if he was looking for her input on the matter.

“Is a full moon shift different from the other times?” she asked, thoughtful as she twined a longer curl of hair around her finger. Was it important for him to let it happen tonight? Was it because she was here?

Peering up at her, grin still curling around the corners of his mouth, Max nodded. It was different, both because it felt more inevitable than any other time, but it wasn't about to catch him off guard. He recalled the first couple of years dealing with it, how much he'd resented the unending pull, but now it was just a part of the routine. If he got it all out during the full moon, the urge to shift the rest of the time was a little easier to ignore, if he had to.

“Yeah, it's... well, inevitable, but it doesn't catch you by surprise, if you know what I mean?” the werewolf murmured, eyes flicking away from her face to look at the encroaching dark through the trees. The creatures that preferred the nighttime were moving around, the little sounds reaching his ears. “It's not this overwhelming push, or loss of control, like it is when something pushes me into it. Just... a bit like being invited, because it's safe. At least, that's how it feels now.”

Max shifted his eyes back to Emily, quirking his eyebrow as he wondered what she thought about that. Admittedly, his feelings around his werewolfism had started out complicated and stayed that way for a bit. He'd hated the loss of control, the full moon the ultimate sign that he'd never be able to stop it. Meeting Mathus and Juniper had added a different perspective, and he had been able to stop it, just not on the full moon. And now he only tried as a game, a challenge to himself. And some of that old resentment, too. It hurt to hold back, and it was frustrating, which was why when he did try to hold back, he was more destructive in the wake.

After nodding to show she understood she followed his gaze. The evening was fast approaching now that the sun was slipping behind the mountains. She looked up to spy the faint orb of the moon through the wispy campfire smoke. Emily thought Dulce would probably soon wake up from her afternoon nap as well.

“Inviting,” Emily repeated softly, thoughtful and intrigued. While she’d seen the agony Max’s magic inflicted on him first hand, to hear that it could also be inviting was interesting. He made it sound like a positive challenge. The allowance of suffering for a better end. Safety, in this case.

Actually, as Emily chewed it over, the implications warmed her heart—two years ago, when Max had revealed himself to her, he’d sounded scared and wounded. The expectation had been a loss of control and destruction. Now, it seemed as though he’d made peace with it, and the difference made her grin.

“Full moon aside, you make it sound so much better than it used to be,” she concluded, her happy expression warming her eyes as she looked back at the werewolf.

Max cocked his head, considering Emily's grin and her words, his own grin still firmly in place, although taking on a wry twist as she openly acknowledged how it used to be.

“Yeah,” he said on an exhale, near enough a sigh, comfortable and at peace. “When I'd just got stateside I was... nervous, maybe? High-strung might be a better word for it. I'd just got kicked out of the army, getting a reality check for trying to pretend I could still make it work.”

Flicking his eyes away from Emily's face, his grin slipped off, worrying his lip with his teeth as he recalled the last months of active service. What led to his eventual discharge.

Emily was glad that he agreed, but when Max’s expression faltered, she mirrored him, empathy getting the better of her grin. It wasn't the happiest thing to reminisce about if the way he worried his lower lip was anything to go by. Renewing her grin, her hands moved from his hair to cup his cheeks as she curled over him and pressed a kiss to his forehead.

“Yeah, I remember,” she said thoughtfully. “I don't think you were high-strung though. I'm high strung.” She grinned wider, poking fun at herself. She cocked her head in the other direction as she considered Max. “You were very guarded... Though looking back, I can think of a few times where it was blindingly obvious you were a werewolf if I'd known then what I know now.”

Emily didn't dig into the whys of Max's discharge, so he carefully packed his own tentative thoughts around it back down and focused on what she was saying. Her attention was more on how he'd characterised himself, rather than the question he'd dodged all those years ago. Guarded seemed appropriate, outwardly, but he’d felt high-strung at points at least.

Max had to give her a sceptical look when she said it'd been blindingly obvious, because the only obvious one had to be when he'd actually shifted in front of her, wasn't it? The darkness had been the only thing allowing for any shred of doubt. He'd more or less told Dune, and she had said nothing to make him think she'd guessed it. If anyone could've, he figured it'd be her, and he didn’t think she’d be the kind to make him think she was clueless when it turned out they were both in the shit.

“I know that day with your first ritual definitely counts as ‘obvious’, but what other times are there?” Max asked, cocking his head as he shifted an arm, reaching to smooth a palm over her hip and hook a finger into her waistband.

The skeptical look made her grin and when he asked for elaboration, she could see where his doubt came from.

Laughing bashfully, Emily tucked her hair behind one ear before it fell in his face. “Maybe not obvious. It’s all in retrospect, you know? I’d written it off then but I can think of a few times where you surprised me by running way too fast. Then there was another time-” She huffed in amusement as she recalled this, flushing faintly. “You kind of cornered me in the kitchen? I remember that clearly. It was also pretty hot.”

Grinning, she dropped her hand to his bicep as he wrapped his arm around her and squeezed lightly. She trailed her hand up to his elbow and then idly rested it on his forearm, squirming lightly when his finger slipped under her waistband.

Max's eyes followed her fingers as she tucked her hair behind her ear, before his eyes slid back to her face, a curious expression on his face at her bashful little laugh. As she explained, he could see it, but it all hinged on hindsight. He remembered pushing a little with the running, when he chased her up the stairs or on the beach, but he was always behind her, so not too fast. Maybe he just caught up to her too quickly, enough that once she’d got chased for real, she could tell.

Then curious eyes caught her flush, that barely there reddening of her cheeks, and he let out a quiet laugh as she elaborated some more. Cornered her in the kitchen? They'd got up to plenty in her kitchen, but he couldn't quite remember it like that.

“Cornered you, huh?” Max asked, words dripping out slowly as he tried to imagine it and remember why she thought it'd been hot. Biting his lip, he knew he was guilty of near enough stalking Emily like prey, too interested in her rabbit-fast heartbeat and the way she reacted. He tugged on her waistband, where his finger was tucked in. “When was this?”

From the syrupy quality of his voice, Emily knew she’d caught Max’s attention, and chuckled softly. It gave her goosebumps. Squirming again when he tugged on her waistband, she shifted her hand to squeeze his fingers. She was feeling coy but she didn’t pull his hand away completely.

“You know- Looking back, I might be reading into it,” she confessed, grinning broadly and twisting away from having to verbally recount the moment. The memory of Max standing shirtless in her kitchen doorway was lovely, enough to fluster her slightly. “It was the first time we went home together. When we did body shots.”

When Emily's hand squeezed his fingers, Max let go of her waistband to curl his fingers around hers, holding her hand as she spoke. He let himself think back to that evening he'd found her in the Inkpot and convinced her to take him home. The reminder had a sly smirk spreading. It'd been a good night, even if they'd only just reconnected, and in more intimate ways than before.

“Can't deny being on the prowl that night,” Max teased, running his tongue over his top lip before biting down on his bottom. Giving her a sly wink, he added “But that was all me, sweetheart,” well aware it was just silly enough to get a laugh out of her.

As Max’s sly grin grew, so did Emily’s blush. Likewise with her smile and she hooted a laugh just as he’d hoped. “Well, that’s lucky for you! I can’t tell the difference between being stalked and being seduced,” she joked as she tapped the tip of his nose with her free hand.

Emily wasn’t keeping track of the time, nor was she in any hurry but with the light falling rapidly, she began to feel anticipatory. Max’s shift was inevitable and she looked forward to meeting the wolf again. There was magic to do as well, and though she was blunt to the ebb and flow of the supernatural, she thought she could sense something in the air.

Dropping the smirk for a broader grin as Emily near enough guffawed, Max squeezed her hand as she spoke. When she tapped his nose, he snorted gently and turned his head into her thigh, rubbing his nose against her clothing as he peered up at her, corner of his eye creasing as he grinned.

“Or maybe you've just been seduced, all these times,” Max joked back, voice muffled, but clearly amused.

But he couldn't lie around and banter with Emily in the twilight, so Max let go of her hand and started to sit up. The full body ache was as steady as it always was, neither intensifying nor fading, a pressure that settled into the comfortable and well-deserved ache of a tough workout. He didn't feel like he was bursting at the seams, which bode well for being around Emily during the full moon.

There'd still been a sliver of worry, the difference between having no actual choice–regardless of being at peace with it, it had to happen–and being fully in control stark enough to have him wonder. The moon didn't make him feel like a fraying rope, unravelling into a disaster, more like Max had enough sense of himself to slowly unwind into it. Maybe it'd be a less frantic full moon than some others he'd had. A hunt, of course, but he might circle the camp more closely than he did otherwise.

“Lucky me, then,” she amended quietly with a little laugh. Straightening as Max sat up, Emily let him go and put her book aside.

With his back to her, she pushed herself onto her knees and looped her arms over his shoulders. Resting her head next to his as she leaned on him, she asked curiously, “Are we at that time now?”

Sitting up and drawing in his legs, folding them under himself, Max reached up and hooked a hand over Emily's forearm as he felt the weight of her arms curling around his shoulders. He pressed his cheek against hers as she leaned against him, peering up into the twilight sky and watching the moon appear as the dark took hold.

“Soon,” Max murmured, feeling the ache, but the lack of urgency didn't have him hurrying to meet the inevitable just yet. He was a little reluctant to leave Emily with nothing but the company of a wolf who couldn’t speak in full sentences, even if he'd have to. He turned his head, pressing a dry kiss to the corner of her mouth. “Tell me about your ritual.”

After returning the quick kiss, Emily settled her chin on Max’s shoulder, gaze flicking up to the moon as well. The position was comfortable, and she was glad it was “soon” rather than “now”. She didn’t mind the wolf’s taciturn nature but she certainly preferred talking to Max as he was.

As for the ritual, although she hadn’t been secretive, she realized she also hadn’t taken the time to explain part of why she wanted to join him for the full moon this month. She was equal parts excited and nervous for this experiment, but she and Max had a good track record with magic.

“It’s not my usual spellcraft so it might not work, but I’m going to try shapeshifting,” she said, glancing at him to see what he might think of that.

As Emily settled her chin on his shoulder, Max settled comfortably into their new position. He dropped his hand back into his lap, picking at the threads along the inseam of his trousers as he made an interested noise as Emily elaborated a little. It really wasn't something she'd dabbled in before, based on what Max knew of her past rituals, but it was definitely interesting. He could see the draw of a new challenge, too, rather than chiefly sticking to what he’d come to consider her wheelhouse.

Unsettling, too, if Max really considered transformative magic. It sounded a little heavier than the other stuff she'd done–mostly because she was changing her physical shape, rather than adding magic to a thing. It felt like it had a higher margin of error, but he had nothing to back that up, only the knowledge that all magic seemed volatile to him. Even his own made him go out of his gourd, even if it’d taken a while to even label it magic.

Biting his lip, he wondered out loud, “What're the risks, do you know? Will it just fizzle if it doesn’t work?”

Admiring his profile from her position, Emily tipped her head down to hide her grin. It would've given her away as she said, “Not sure. It might turn me inside out. Or backwards.” There was the barest laugh in her voice, Emily unpracticed at deadpanning jokes, but she managed it well enough.

Teasing aside, it was a valid concern. Fortunately, she'd spoken with enough practitioners at the Circle to understand that there were relatively safe ways to practice shapeshifting. The first safety measure was creating an enchanted item rather than putting oneself directly in the ritual. The second was taking advantage of the breadth of experience available to her in notes and research from the past. It was the only reason she was willing to try it in the first place.

It was a good thing Max caught the laugh in her voice, or he might've done something ill-advised, like carry her down the mountain full moon be damned and take away her chalk. Instead, he pulled a face at the visual, but he couldn't stop the unease churning in the pit of his stomach. So Max was helpless to those feelings, staying serious as he tilted his head to press his lips to the side of her face.

“Don't joke about that,” Max breathed out, neither annoyed nor angry, but plaintive. He was too familiar with human guts, his brain conjuring a vivid, visceral image in his mind’s eye, and he was already uneasy about what magic could do, even if he trusted what Emily did with it.

Something like animalistic panic lurked in the edge of his mind, the pure violent fear animals were capable of. It hooked into him, tugging at his mind, but it didn't overtake his faculties like the wolven feelings and instincts sometimes did. He squeezed her forearm, hand still curled around it, rubbing his thumb back and forth as he breathed her in and listened to her heartbeat. Sometimes it felt like his senses were especially sensitive during full moons, but he wondered if it wasn't all in his head. Still, he focused on Emily's smell, her heartbeat, the feeling of her pressed up along his back.

She knew Max distrusted magic but didn’t know it was to the point where she couldn’t get a laugh out of him. Despite the kiss, it wasn’t the happiest reaction and Emily dropped the charade with a sympathetic, “Okay, I’m sorry.” Hugging him, she tucked herself closer against his back, more or less curling around him as best she could, trying to be comforting. She could tell that his humorless reaction came from a protective place.

“I did a lot of research and developed the spell with others at the Circle. If it doesn’t work, it’ll just fizzle,” she soothed, confident and reassuring. “The only reason I didn’t try it there is because, well… you’re my guy.” Emily smiled gently. She’d started doing magic with Max first, and vastly preferred it that way.

Max managed a weak smile as Emily apologised, and as she curled in closer, that wild feeling in his chest loosened its grip a measure more. The feeling that he was going apart at the seams drew back. What helped even more was Emily giving him more detail rather than joking around. Research and development was something Max trusted, coming from Emily, and he felt himself relaxing thinking about how anyone at the Circle would've warned Em if something looked wrong or could go wrong.

As per usual, she had it covered, which he'd known even if he hadn't appreciated the direction her joking had gone in. Details always helped, and as she continued, saying he was her guy Max felt the last of the tension coiling drop away and he let his shoulders loosen. The both of them were curled so tightly together they were almost face to face, and he tilted his head to press his forehead to hers. He let out a sigh to release the very last bit of unease.

“Your guy, huh?” He murmured, soft and pleased.

Shifting so there was room for their foreheads to touch, Emily’s grin twitched wider at their closeness. She could feel his tension bleed away in her embrace, and she loosely gripped Max’s shirt in her fingers to cling to him. She could feel his dog tags under the fabric. The way he sounded so pleased made her heart thump.

“Yeah, my guy,” she confirmed, her voice low and affectionate. Licking her lips, Emily was tempted to add something humorous to ease the unidentifiable weight of meaningfulness that accompanied the expression, but decided against it. She didn’t have the vocabulary to go on either. The arcanist grinned and left it there, letting Max know how incredibly special he was to her in some kind of shallow subtext.

The only struggle was that she couldn’t stay close and facing him. Flushing, she pressed her forehead firmly against his and then turned away to glance up at the moon again. She looked mildly antsy even if she didn’t want the werewolf to rush to a shift.

Feeling her fingers curl into his shirt, shifting the weight of his dog tags as her fingers brushed against them, Max ducked his head and smiled as she repeated her words. If he read into it, it sounded like the sort of layered statement that crept into his conversations with Emily. Simmering with a potential that Max wanted to pry open and examine on the days where he felt at his most stable, neither the wolf nor his personal human traumas making a racket in his head. He’d left them unexplored, though. All of it was too precious for him to dare tip the balance.

Few people made Max feel like he'd go to war for them all over again, and Emily was at the top of that list. Each time they found trouble, or she went off and got into trouble all of her own, he felt the creeping impulse of violence. Protective, but the kind where he’d kill someone without even thinking twice. Whether wolven instincts or just Max's lived human experience, he couldn’t tell, but he hadn't taken time to poke at that house of cards either. A lot of it boiled down to not looking too hard at things.

Letting out a breath, feeling under his skin the lengths he'd go to if Emily just asked, Max squeezed her arm again. His thumb kept moving against her skin, and then he spoke, “You know you're mine, too?” Soft and quiet, but clear in the twilight surrounding them. He angled his head to press against her neck as she looked at the sky. “My gal.” His smile twisted wryly as he echoed the sentiment.

A truth from multiple perspectives, hidden or obvious. Emily was the only one who got the full picture. Everyone else had partial pieces, even if Max tried to be honest. Some things he hadn't shared openly with anyone, but that was his psyche to work through.

Max’s returned sentiment was very welcome. Flushing darker, Emily grinned, even as she kept her gaze on the twilight sky. In other circumstances, with someone else, she might’ve balked, finding it all too much to bear. Or, worst case scenario, even artificial. Relationships moving too fast or lurched in directions she didn’t expect. That wasn’t the case here.

Here, the things they said were true, things that she felt deep in her chest, but left unsaid. Max was her closest and most trusted friend, the dearest person in her life. The person she wanted to see flourish more than anything else in the world. These things probably needed to be said one day, she thought, but this was perfectly comfortable. His gal, her guy.

“I know,” she said happily. She tilted her head to rest it against his, thinking distantly of swans that curled around one another when they were in love. She tightened her hug. “So, does that sound better to you or would you rather I didn’t try it?”

Letting out a slow breath, something satisfied twisted in his chest as Emily said she knew. They could leave a lot unsaid, these days, the both of them good at reading the other, but he enjoyed it more when they didn't. When her head moved and she tightened the hug, Max didn't move. He just let out a low chuckle as she checked in with him again.

“It's good,” Max confirmed, smiling a little helplessly at her checking in with him again. That she was giving him the option to nix it might've been why Max couldn't bring himself to dislike Emily's magic, not when she clued him in and explained things. “It sounds like you've got it all planned out, I'm not worried.”

Max squeezed her arm again, but then a full body ache lit up his nerves. He let out a pained exhale, curling into himself as his muscles stiffened. He let go of her forearm like the touch suddenly burned, turning his face away from her as the pain flared.

Eminently pleased to have his go-ahead, Emily’s lips parted, about to ask a follow up about gathering components. Logically, a shapeshifting spell could only be enhanced when one involved a true shapeshifter. Those at the Circle agreed although talk about such components was conducted wistfully. Shapeshifters were either rare or dangerous or both—Emily didn’t give up that she knew a guy.

However, the emotional detour had been so absorbing that Emily almost forgot why they were here. Max tensed with pain, and she could feel his back muscles stiffening and going taut along her front. She didn’t catch on fast enough to swallow a noise of surprise and concern.

It was a natural reaction, and she didn’t like knowing he was in pain, even if it was inevitable. Straightening up as he turned his face away, Emily almost pushed away completely, a thrill of anticipation going through her. However when Max paused, exhaling, she did too. Still braced with her hips on his back, she began rubbing his shoulders. “Is it time? Am I keeping you?” she wondered, her tone concerned but light and polite. She didn’t want to keep the werewolf from his business.

It was a sudden flare up, the constant low-grade ache cascading along his nerves for a moment, only prickling into the background once Max caught his breath and got used to it again. The moon reminding him, maybe, if he'd been one to anthropomorphise the full moon. But he didn't think it had much of a will of its own, just an unceasing pull on creatures such as himself when it hung full and heavy above their heads. In myth it had power, but Max knew man had set foot on it, so he had a hard time imagining it as some god.

But as Max adjusted to the ratcheted up level of aches and pains, he was relieved Emily hadn't pulled away. At least, not completely, even if she didn't find it all that pleasant when he curled in on himself as the pain yanked at the fabric of his being. Her hands rubbing over his shoulders helped ground him, managing another exhale to release the tension. His muscles relaxed as she rubbed over them, but her question got a hoarse chuckle and a shake of his head.

“No- no, just. Being reminded, I guess,” Max offered, vaguely, but his strained voice might be an excuse for not getting into it. He knew he'd better get to it rather than try to resist it, though. “But I should, y'know, get on with it. Is there anything you need, for the ritual?” As he asked, he leaned back into her, loathe to have her stop rubbing his shoulders, like a dog who wanted his fur pet and ears scratched. He turned his head to look at her face, eyebrows going up in question.

He leaned back into her and she naturally started to massage his shoulders with intent. She pressed her thumbs into the muscles, trying to ease the tension out of them.

She could hear the strain in his voice and it made her breath hitch. A sympathetic pang made goosebumps prick up on her forearms and she vaguely recalled the sounds of cracking bones and stretching tendons. Maybe Max managed it well, but when she saw him in agony it certainly looked like a curse. With the full moon tugging at him now, she was herself reminded of the real folklore. Being a werewolf was no walk in the park.

She frowned but Max changed the subject and she huffed a laugh. He seemed to know the process well enough to preempt her. “I was going to ask for a bit of your fur actually,” she admitted. “I promise not to pluck it out of your tail or anywhere that’ll pinch.”

Letting out a pleased sigh as Emily didn't just keep rubbing his shoulders, but started massaging the muscle, Max let his shoulders drop and relax into it. He could tell she was uncomfortable with what was happening to him–going to happen–but more toward sympathy and hating that he was in pain than some disgust about the entire process. At least he got a laugh out of her when he prodded for more about the ritual, knowing she'd want something. Probably not another homemade slingshot, but if there was something he could do, Max would do it.

Her asking for his fur got a huffed laugh out of him, her promise reminding him when she'd plucked a tuft from his tail when they'd been fooling around in her kitchen. This was less carefree, but only because of the full moon. Again, Max appreciated the question, even if it didn't occur to him to say no to her.

“Sure, you can have some of my fur,” he said, twisting his torso and slipping out from under her hands–loath to do it, but he'd be sitting there dragging it out if he didn't–shifting his legs to face her where they sat. Leaning in, he nuzzled her cheek before he pressed a kiss to the corner of her mouth, murmuring, “Anything else you want?”

Sitting back on her heels, she let the werewolf go, giving him space to turn and face her. She vaguely wondered if he would mind if she took a pair of scissors to him or if he'd take exception to an uneven haircut even in wolf-form. She didn't muse over it for long. Max was probably asking in earnest, but the low tone of voice and his sudden proximity made Emily exhale breathily into the kiss. Stomach doing a little flip, her eyelashes fluttered closed and she grinned, feeling like quite the fool for him.

Turning her head to return the kiss, she relished the warmth and softness of his lips, but tried to keep it otherwise sweet and innocent. She faltered, and lingered, pressing another kiss fully to his mouth. When she pulled back, Emily glanced to one side, to the fire as she grinned and murmured, “If I think of something I'll let you know.” She glanced back at him, urging, “You should get it over with. Pull the bandaid off already.”

With the night so close, the fire burned much brighter, sending embers up into the sky along with the clear smoke.

Max wasn't blind to the effect he had on Emily, but even as he hummed in quiet pleasure as she kissed him, he knew he wouldn't have the chance to take advantage. Too bad, but it wouldn't be sexy if he was in pain while trying to paw at her. Her second kiss got a soft sigh out of him, wishing he could take advantage, but when she pulled back so did Max.

Bowing his head, he chuckled as he nodded, looking at her and taking in how the firelight lit up her edges and soft curves as the darkness fell. “Yeah,” he said, finally, letting out a gusty breath, and then he rolled up onto his feet. Straightening, he pulled off his shirt first, tossing it towards the open flap of the tent, turning towards Emily. “You gonna do the ritual soon?”

He asked her as his hands went to his belt buckle, looking at her from under his lashes as he checked in with her. With the belt unbuckled, he unbuttoned and started pushing his waistband down, catching his underwear as well, to take them all off at once. He'd already ditched his shoes and socks before he'd started napping in the sun.

Max gazed at her and she felt the heat creep up from under her collar, but she just smiled. Brushing a bit of hair out of her face, she met his eyes and then glanced back at the fire, feeling a little giddy as the moment drew on. The timing was off but the potential was pleasant to think about. When he finally spoke, she exhaled, letting the momentary tension bleed as quickly as it'd come on.

Then he was standing and shucking his shirt, and that was when she could look at him again. Sitting back on her backside and hugging her knees, she pillowed her chin in her hand and openly admired him as he undressed. “Yeah, actually. As soon as possible, since I think...” She bit her lip, tilting her head as her eyes idly followed the hem of his trousers he pulled them down. After a moment's thought, she decided to be coy about her plans and grinned up at him. “It'll be pretty useful tonight.”

It didn’t surprise Max Emily wanted to do it ASAP rather than drag it out, no matter how much Max might've wanted to creep around in the woods once he changed shape. He guessed he didn't have to hang around for it, but he didn't want to leave her working magic without someone watching her back, either. That third time, when the magic had tugged more than she'd expected from her, still stuck in his mind as a reason to not leave her doing it solo.

But she was letting her eyes wander, and that was more interesting than whatever impulses he might've had once he switched his skin for a pelt of fur. His trousers dropped and Emily played coy, getting an interested hum out of the werewolf.

“Oh?” he murmured, stepping out of his pooled underwear and trousers. He bent to pick them up, his dog tags clinking and swinging from the movement, folding the trousers and underwear into a messy bundle and lobbing them towards the tent and his crumpled shirt. He looked at her, grinning, toothy and sharp, as he teased her. “What are you shapeshifting into? A doe for me to chase?”

The jokes about eating her out practically wrote themselves, so Max left them all unsaid. It was a tempting thought, something faster than a human to chase, but chasing Emily always was.

Max took her tease and ran with it, making Emily breathe out a laugh. She glanced away and shook her head, grinning warmly. Trust Max to turn a bit of magic shop talk into a flirt. Now that he'd tossed his trousers, Emily looked, because of course she looked, but otherwise kept her eyes on his face.

“I wish I'd thought of that,” she admitted as she carefully rose and brushed off her hands. She left the book on the ground, knowing nobody would come around and disturb their camp site. “But no. You’ll have to wait and see!” Grinning coyly, she started moving toward the tent and her spellbag before adding the caveat, “If it works.”

Cinder (Attunement) Complete success

Max reached out and caught her hand before she turned away completely, laughing quietly at her insisting he'd have to 'wait and see.' He tugged her back towards him, leaning in to peck her on the cheek and reassure her with a soft and confident, “It'll work.”

Letting her go, he reached up to lift his dog tags over his head, looping them over her head with a clatter of the tags and the three objects that were threaded on the chain. “Keep an eye on these for me,” he requested softly, tapping one of the tags before he pulled back, turning to step away, towards the thicker woods around their campsite clearing.

Emily had seen it all before, at this point, but that didn’t mean Max wanted to make her listen to it each time he shifted around her.
