When Emily’s parents divorced, she was sad, but it was a relief. They never seemed to like one another anyway, and the fights were constant. However, when they remarried and started new families, the young girl realized that any chance at the home she once had was gone forever. Feelings of insecurity and abandonment abound, buried deep.

Emily remembers standing on her abuela’s porch one hot humid summer day. A hurricane was coming and they’d just boarded up the windows. Her abuela made agua fresca with cucumbers from the garden Emily and her sisters helped tend. They could see the sky getting dark, but they took their time, enjoying their drinks as the wind picked up. She treasures the memory as the happiest she’s ever been.

The day her abuela died left Emily numb, but otherwise okay. They’d known it was coming and Emily comforted herself with their shared faith. That was the last time, though. It was the subsequent infighting over her grandmother’s humble estate that caused her to emotionally detach from her family in all but the most superficial ways. She has trouble connecting with others and trusting.
