Juniper was afflicted with the shifter curse when she was just four years old in a misguided attempt by her parents to save her life. While it cured the terminal illness that had plagued her short life up to that point, it led to a whole different kind of misery. When she was seven, she murdered her own parents while feral, which drew the Exchange's attention. Although the organization took her under its wing, protecting her because her situation was not her fault, she'd already lost all opportunities for a normal life.
Juniper has missed out on all the things that might give her a touchstone in human life, and she's hyperaware of how abnormal she is. She resents it. With the threat of her affliction hanging over her, she was never able to attend regular school, never able to date, never able to exist as her own person. Life was always about her as the monster, the monster that stands in the way of everything. As such, she has problems coping and controlling herself, but after she turned eighteen, the Exchange gave her every reason to change. Either she would change, or she would be put down.
Progress is slow, but everyone loves a character arc. Juniper is learning how to be a participant in her own life, often with a white-knuckled tenacity, and no shortage of unhappiness. But she's intent on making it work.
Juniper tends not to make friends with humans unless they're in the know about what she is. The discomfort of it is too much for her to handle. She makes easy friends with supernaturals, though, comfortable and confident in her own inhuman power. As a friend, she is exuberant but intense and often quick to anger, instinct giving her a short fuse. She thrives with people who have a firm hand while quickly losing patience with those who don't show a lot of spine. She doesn't have the emotional energy to keep two people afloat.
