A very happy New Year to everyone! Happily, most loyal readers report that their midnight celebrations were uneventful. However, late last night, we received several reports in our email about some very strange happenings!

If you rang in the New Year at the Barbarous night club last night, it's possible that shiver up your spine wasn't just the chill from the front door. The LIGHTHOUSE doesn't have all the details yet, but we have it from several VERY REPUTABLE sources that suspicious characters were drawing circles in the alley behind the club! You know the kind!

Whatever happened last night, there's something strange about the club in the morning light, wouldn't you say, dear readers?? And it's not just the hangover! Be careful with your party spots people, but if you just can't resist the dance floor, report back if you see anything!

The other set of reports comes from the library, the site of just last month's Winter Festival! Just as the LIGHTHOUSE predicted, not all of those sheet-wearing mischief-makers were people in costume! And we're POSITIVE that not all of those little trinkets they handed out were just nice to look at!

Flying books, shadowy figures between the stacks? The Grey Mares must've pissed something off in the library! If you're the knowledge-seeking sort, brave the shelves for us and report back!

An approaching Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year isn't happening until February 1st but that just gives you, dear readers, more time to prepare! While we're sure to see a glorious festival down in Balmoral, there's always more under the surface! Whatever your tradition, it's always good to have fireworks on hand to ward off bad spirits and Nian. And for extra good luck, consider buying and decorating your dinner table with twelve different round fruits, one for each month of the year!

And if anyone wants to send some of those red envelopes our way, our PO Box is always open. More on this great festival next month! Stay alert and stay safe this new year! And remember your S.I.S!: "Silver. Iron. Sunlight."

Mermaids in the harbor???

Sometimes that enchanting singing down in Old Town subway isn't just a particularly good street performance. The LIGHTHOUSE has it on good authority that there are MERMAIDS in the harbor and reports of a recent altercation PROVE IT. Although there was no body or remains, eyewitnesses drawn by the sound of shouting and gunshots say that they spotted two men fighting an aquatic monster! A heinous creature that tried to draw our two heroes into the depths with its alluring song.

While we have no photographic evidence and no access to police reports, there is no doubt in our mind that mermaids lurk in the dark waters of our fair harbor. Be careful where you go swimming, dear readers! Stick to indoor pools!

December Updates

So, first and foremost, we've started advertising and affiliating properly, so look out for new members in the Discord! If you want to advertise for us, you can find our ad in here. A very warm welcome to all newcomers!

As for everyone else who's already stuck here with us, get in here, I got somethin' to say to you.

Mechanical
Where to Roll Dice
All rolls are now to be performed on the Discord, rather than on-site, using the #official-dice channel.

Change to Strike DCs
After a bit of testing, the Strike DCs for each Path were lowered. Now they better mirror the success ranges for the Cinder DCs. These will be noted in your path badge and the dice document, but here they are for your perusal:

base human, Defense DC 1
arcanist, Defense DC 2
half-blood, Defense DC 3
natural shifter, Defense DC 4
afflicted shifter, Defense DC 5
Undead, Defense DC 4
Spirit, Defense DC 5 (So long as they are Incorporeal: +5 to Defense DC.)

Assistance
By actively assisting another character, you can help lower the TNs for certain activities and give better chances for success.
Double or Nothing
Some situations are so volatile, someone can only hope not to fail. A high risk, high reward attempt at something dangerous.
Strike Outside of Combat
You can use your Strike Pool outside of combat by measuring it against the same success range that the Cinder Pool uses.

Cinder in Combat

A successful physical hit with magic is determined by the Cinder Roll success range.
Partial success is only a close call for your opponent, but complete success is a hit. Extraordinary success is equal to two hits.
Keep in mind the restrictions each Path has on its magic use.

Iron Will
Base humans without a Cinder pool have no defense unless they possess Iron Will. In this case, they can roll to resist mind-affecting magic (hypnosis, prey-paralysis) with a 4d6. Metahumans receive an additional 1d6.

These items represent potential ways that the city will react to the goings-on in the streets, mundane and supernatural. It is also the possible arrival of interesting figures, strange events we have planned, and so much more. They're keyed to different things, big and small, and we'll be constantly adding to the list as we go, replacing old items or adding something fun and new, so keep an eye on that spot. See what happens when we fill a bar! A Humble Brownstone is looking pretty close...

Encounters
PvE! For each location on the board, we have a truly extensive table of possible encounters. In order to try it out, start a thread in your chosen location, and whenever you feel ready, post in our Moderation Request thread to see what you'll get. Probabilities are always a work in progress, but we have things arranged so that we roll on a table for your result, so it's random for us too!

Thread Prefixes
Just some fun things to play with when you're posting a new thread or editing the first post in a thread. Keeps things tidy! You're now able to add a more specific location, time of day, and if the thread isn't on the same day as it's being posted, the correct date. You're also now able to denote if a thread is Open or NSFW without having to edit the thread title.

Rumors say these places are hotbeds of supernatural activity. These will change monthly, so keep an eye out for updates!

This month we've received a pair of anonymous tips concerning real and TRUE supernatural sightings around our fair city!!

Although the police reports will tell a different story, the grisly remains of a pair of hikers found up in the Northrop Park are not the work of some human madman. Our paranormal investigators say that this is without a doubt the work of something inhuman. Be careful out there, faithful readers! Remember to carry silver and iron to so you can tell any wayward monsters to take a hike.

Our second tip comes from the sea, where a four-legged creature was spotted running into the surf and disappearing into the waves. Unfortunately, we're unable to publish the photos we were sent--please make sure you have your flash on, dear readers!-- but this anonymous tipper swears up and down that it was too large to be a dog and it never surfaced! What a mystery!

These creatures may look like lost Halloweeners, but they're anything but! Remember that creatures such as these need an invitation to enter, so be careful who you let into your home, dear readers!
